In the United States traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of
death for persons under age 45. Approximately 5 million Americans suffer from some
form of TBI disability. The leading causes of TBI are motor vehicle accidents, falls
and sports injuries. While the brain is by far the most complex object on earth,
it is soft and vulnerable with the consistency of firm pudding.
Unfortunately there are no medically accepted criteria that can predict permanent
brain damage from a particular trauma. The factors doctors take into consideration,
however, include the following:
- Loss of consciousness
- Post traumatic amnesia
- Concussion
- Encephalopathy
- Focal neurologic signs
- Seizure
- And many other symptoms that may be present.
